Harvest Notes

The 2010 edition of the Blasted Church Gewurztraminer is a blend of fruit from Kelowna, West Kelowna and our own Blasted Church estate. The 2010 vintage seemed to be long and drawn out, fruit in some vineyards were able to hang for long periods because they were lucky not to have gone through a frost in mid-late October. For example the Gewürztraminer from West Kelowna was not picked until November 1st. The fruit from Kelowna and Blasted Church were handpicked during the week of October 20th.

Winemaking

The fruit was handpicked and brought to the winery for whole cluster and whole berry sorting before entering the press. The practice of sorting is usually carried out to all lots, but for the 2010 vintage we decided to process some of the Gewürztraminer in a different manner. 50% of the fruit was whole bunch pressed. This method is considered to be gentle when extracting the juice and limits the amount of tannin that will be extracted. The idea of whole bunch pressing the Gewurztraminer was to retain some of the delicate aromas and flavors that could be lossed due to aggressive or rough handling of the fruit.
