Harvest Notes

Some growers and winemakers would say that the 2010 vintage was average at best. Others would say that the 2010 vintage was similar 2004/05 and that growers and winemakers have been spoiled. The 2010 Hatfield’s Fuse with all its varieties proves that the vintage was not as average as some people would make it out to be. The 2010 Hatfield’s Fuse showcases seven varietals that benefited from good viticulture, patience and belief that everything will ripen.

Winemaking

Each variety in the blend was hand harvested and kept separate throughout the vinification process allowing for the full expression of each varietal. Different processes were used during the production of many of the varieties. For example, a percentage of the Pinot Gris was cold soaked to maximize extraction for a heavier mouth feel and to improve concentration of fruit character. We also whole cluster pressed some Gewürztraminer to see if we could extract some of the more delicate characteristics that Gewürztraminer possesses. By treating all of the varieties differently and tweaking our production methods we discovered during blending trials that this year’s Fuse would be more complex and have an unctuous quality that is difficult to retain throughout the winemaking process. We were able to add more Ehrenfelser to the blend which always makes aromatic whites better and compliments the Gewürztraminer. These steps taken during processing have made an already solid blend better.
