Harvest Notes

This is the first time release of a 100% Petit Verdot by Blasted Church, one of the very few wineries producing this wine from a grape not extensively grown in the valley. Although it is a late ripening grape, sometimes as late as Cabernet Sauvignon, it was harvested in mid-October because it was on its third leaf, which is usually when vines will begin to bear fruit.

Winemaking

The Petit Verdot grapes came from a contract grower in Osoyoos. After it is hand harvested, the fruit under goes whole cluster and whole berry sorting. This process ensures the removal of undesirable materials such as leaves, vines, stems and un-ripe berries. After the sorting process the whole berries are transferred to tank where the must underwent a "cold soak" for a short time, allowing for the gentle extraction of colour, tannin and flavour components from the skins. The must is then warmed and inoculated with a yeast strain specifically chosen to accentuate the complex varietal character of Petit Verdot. The must was gently pressed off, and inoculated with malolatic bacteria, and transferred to barrels.
